Andy Hyman's Wine Tasting Companion is a clear, comprehensive complete beginner's guide to wine tasting. It is especially useful to have in hand while visiting wineries for tasting or choosing a bottle from a confusing range of choices. Beautifully illustrations with many gorgeous photographs give you a range of useful information from food pairings. cheese pairings and chocolate pairings to interesting information about the region and the history of winemakers who contributed to making the wine making industry as it is today.
My wife and I, two wine newbies, stumbled across this book and it really spoke to us. It is an easy read, but packed with information. We learned about rim color, proper swirling technique and the importance of smelling the wine three times before tasting, as each successive sniff will yield subtle differences. The author also had a list of recommendations for folks depending on how much tannin they prefer. Our favorite wine is Pinot Noir and now we're excited to try another low tannin varietal--Barbera. This is a cool and inexpensive little book!
Great book that makes it easy to learn more wine, including tips on tasting, which I find super helpful. Andy is a wine tour guide, so he has particular knowledge of what people want to know about wine and what confuses them, but that they are afraid to ask about, and it shows in this book. You'll learn enough to feel wine smart and have more fun enjoying wine- whether on a tour, or even at home.
This is such a fun book. The information is written with basic "snob-free" descriptions that are easy to understand and immediately apply. It makes drinking wine so much more enjoyable -- at home or at wineries. My wife and I read it before visiting a few local wineries. It really made a difference in the experience and it made the tastings more fun -- and tasty. The Wine Aroma Wheel alone is worth the price. Have a glass of wine in your hand while reading it and you will appreciate it much more.
Living less than an hour from the Wine Country, I almost always send my out-of-town visitors up there for a day of wine tasting. In the past, I found that because my guests didn't know what to expect, most of their day was gone before they had become oriented enough to enjoy the experience. Ever since I found this Wine Tasting Companion, I've developed a much more effective routine. The evening before their trip I lend them my copy of the book and encourage them to spend an hour with it before bed. By morning, they know enough to knowledgeably enjoy visiting our great local wineries, and are eager to start the experience. The book has just enough of the right information to complement what they will learn in their visits, and it is accessible and easy to read. I have found that my wine novice friends have a much better time in Wine Country after having read this great little book!
I loved this book! I thought I was fairly knowledgeable about wine, but this book proved me wrong. It's factual and fun and full of interesting info. Included are great maps and details about Napa Valley and Sonoma County, even better was the section on "wine & food pairings." This included information on what you should be eating with both red and white wines, so helpful!! (Plus do you know how to pronounce "Gewurtztraminer?" The author includes instructions on how to "sound out" every kind of wine made!!)

The author also dispels Wine Myths and Misconceptions, blew my mind a little bit here, but I learned a lot!
The book is full of colorful pictures, including the interesting "Wine Aroma Wheel" on pages 22-23.
And my very favorite part of the book includes some comments about Gender Differences and who is the better wine taster, based on sense of smell. I know you'll enjoy this book/guide/companion! It's perfect for pairing with a bottle of wine and taking to a dinner party for a hostess gift or give to your local wine "experts!" They'll even be impressed with how much they learn..
This is a GREAT book -- crystal clear, simple but comprehensive. It educated me without confusion or condescension. What most astonished me about "Snob Free" is that nobody's written such a book before. I got a copy in April straight from the Wine Country and relaxed on three different evenings the next week by browsing it. I learned more each night than I'd known in my entire life.
I'm giving it 4 stars rather than 5 ONLY to nudge the author to expand it geographically. Imagine how the uncomplicated, unhokey brilliance of this book could help on an oenological trip to Europe! (I should apologize for using the word 'oenological.' Snobby.)
Did I mention? Great as the writing is, it's just as beautiful and informative graphically.
So, how about a BEER book next?
